The Gaia satellite which is a mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) has been proving useful in the research of asteroids which are also known minor planets.
Gaia’s primary job is to precisely measure over a billion stars in the Milky Way, however it as also tracked down a host of minor dwarf planets in our own solar system.
To determine Gaia’s position in space to which ensures Gaia’s extremely high measuring accuracy, a series of photographs are taken daily in areas of the sky were faint
satellites are known to be. Dr Martin Altmann of the Institute for Astronomical Computing (ARI) states “Each night the images reveal several dozen minor planets.
The date is quite valuable for our understanding of the origin of the solar system.”
The ARI is part of the Centre for Astronomy of Heidelberg University. Dr Altmann heads the observation programme that determines the position of Gaia.
